Understanding the NDIS: Support for people with disability

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s system for providing tailored support to people with disability. It helps participants access the funding, services, and resources they need to live more independently, achieve their goals, and participate fully in their communities. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself, a family member, or someone you care for, the NDIS is designed to give you choice and control over the support you receive.

The NDIS provides funding for reasonable and necessary supports to help people with disability live their best lives. Each person works with a planner to develop an individualised NDIS plan, which outlines goals, support needs, and allocated funding.

Participants can then choose registered providers, like Gateways, to deliver services ranging from daily living support to housing and community participation programs. This flexibility ensures supports are tailored to your needs and goals.

The NDIS journey generally follows three main steps:

  1. Applying – Confirm your eligibility and submit an access request.

  2. Planning – Work with an NDIS planner to identify goals, needs, and the supports that will help you achieve them.

  3. Using Your Plan – Access services and supports through your chosen providers, monitor progress, and update your plan as needed.

Gateways supports you at every stage, providing guidance and practical advice to make the process smooth and stress-free.

The NDIS works alongside mainstream services, such as healthcare, education, and employment programs, to provide a comprehensive network of support. Gateways helps you connect with local community services, social programs, and activities, supporting you to participate fully and build connections within your community.

All NDIS providers are overseen by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. This means there are rules in place to make sure services are safe, respectful, and delivered to a high standard. These rules protect you and make sure you get the support that meets your needs.

At Gateways we go above and beyond. Safety, respect, and well-being are at the heart of everything we do. From how we train our staff to how we create your support plan, we focus on care that makes a real difference in your life.

We listen to and value your feedback to keep improving our services. This way, you can feel confident that your support is not only safe and professional, but also personalised, meaningful, and empowering.

When you choose Gateways, you’re choosing a team that puts you first, helping you feel safe, supported, and able to enjoy life in your home and community.

With over 45 years of experience supporting people with disability, Gateways is more than a service provider, we’re a partner in your journey. Across Western Melbourne, Werribee, and Geelong, our team combines practical expertise with genuine care, creating supports that are not only effective, but also empowering, respectful, and tailored to your life.

We focus on:

  • Person-centred approaches – Your goals, preferences, and unique strengths guide everything we do. Our support is built around you, not a one-size-fits-all model.

  • Community connections – Life is richer when you’re part of your community. We help you build meaningful connections, take part in activities you enjoy, and feel truly included.

  • Experienced, caring staff – Our team bring knowledge, compassion, and a hands-on approach to every step of your journey. We’re here to guide, encourage, and celebrate your progress.

  • Regional expertise – We know the local communities, services, and opportunities across our regions, helping you access support that fits your lifestyle and neighbourhood.

At Gateways, we’re not just delivering services, we’re helping people live full, connected, and independent lives, with confidence and support every step of the way.
