Sport, recreation and inclusion: Partnerships that strengthen our community

August 25, 2026

As Gateways celebrates 45 years of supporting children and adults with disabilities, we are reflecting on the partnerships that help create stronger, more inclusive communities across the Geelong region.

For more than four decades, Gateways has worked alongside local organisations, businesses, sporting clubs and community groups that share our belief that everyone deserves opportunities to participate, connect and thrive. These partnerships play an important role in helping us create meaningful experiences that foster inclusion, belonging and community engagement.

One of these valued partnerships is with Clifton Springs Golf Club, which this year hosted the Gateways Charity Golf Day for the second consecutive year.

Sport and recreation have a unique ability to bring people together. They create welcoming environments where relationships are built, barriers are reduced and communities grow stronger through shared experiences. Through our partnership with Clifton Springs Golf Club, Gateways has been able to connect with local businesses, community members and supporters who are passionate about making a positive difference.

This year's Gateways Annual Charity Golf Day highlighted the impact that community partnerships can have when organisations come together around a common purpose. With the support of Clifton Springs Golf Club CEO, Sophie, the event was elevated through the involvement of former Essendon captain Dyson Heppell, who joined the day as guest speaker and ambassador.

His participation helped shine a spotlight on the importance of inclusion, community connection and creating opportunities for people of all abilities. More importantly, it demonstrated how sporting organisations and community groups can work together to drive positive change beyond the field of play.

As Gateways marks 45 years of service, partnerships like those with Clifton Springs Golf Club reflect the power of community collaboration. They are an example of how local organisations can contribute to creating environments where people feel connected, valued and supported.

These relationships extend beyond individual events. They help build awareness, strengthen community networks and encourage greater participation and inclusion across our region. Whether through sport, recreation, fundraising or advocacy, community partnerships play a vital role in supporting Gateways' vision of an inclusive society full of possibilities.

Looking back on 45 years of impact, one thing remains clear, meaningful change happens when communities come together. By working alongside organisations such as Clifton Springs Golf Club, Gateways continues to build connections that enrich lives, strengthen inclusion and create opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in the communities they call home.
